Mexican Tortas de Jamón

“Torta” can mean pie, cake, tart, (or something much more vulgar), but in this case, it refers to a sandwich. There are many varieties of Mexican tortas, but here is my recipe for Mexican Tortas de Jamón, (Mexican Ham Sandwiches).

Mexican Tortas de Jamón

*Deli thin-sliced ham
*Cheese of your choice (I prefer Pepper Jack)
*Refried beans
*Mayonnaise
*Shredded lettuce
*Sliced tomato
*Sliced avocado
*Pickled jalapeño rings (optional)
*Telera rolls

Slice open telera rolls. Lay open on a baking sheet and place under broiler for a minute until slightly browned. Remove and spread on mayonnaise and a spoonful of refried beans. Place a few slices of ham and a slice of cheese on the other side and put under the broiler until cheese begins to melt. Remove and top with lettuce, tomato, avocado and jalapeño rings.

I learned to make Torta’s from my mother-in-law, but they are made with pot roast. It’s one of my favorite meals to eat. I’ve never tried it this way. Now I’m interested in trying it your way.

@ Tabitha – I’m sure your mother-in-law’s recipe is much more authentic than mine! Would love if you shared it :)

She takes a pot roast and puts it in a crock pot with a chopped onion, 2 garlic cloves, just a little salt (about the size of a dime in the palm of your had), 12 beads of black pepper, and one bay leaf. she lets it sit over night on low.

The next morning she chops up the roast and cooks it in a little oil until brown.

The lettuce, tomato, avacado, mayo, and bread are the same, but she puts a green salsa she makes on it that gives it that little kick. However the pepper jack cheese would work just as well.

Hope that that helps and taste good! Let me know what you think.
