As a lover of both art and words, it’s inevitable that I would love typography. Words have meaning all their own, but when design is thrown into the mix, the emotion of it is amplified. When typography is done right, it can evoke an exact emotion – wistfulness, nostalgia, romance, anger, playfulness, seriousness, excitement, peacefulness, hunger.

Typography is used in magazines, art, television advertisements, restaurant signs, on products and everywhere imaginable to grab your attention.

In recent years, typography has also been used in music videos. This is often referred to as “moving typography” or “animated typography”. I had seen quite a few of these sorts of videos in English and was absolutely enamored, so I went in search of “moving typography” videos in Spanish. I discovered an Uruguyan band called “El Cuarteto de Nos”, who has used this in their videos. I love it! Not only is it fun, but it’s a good way to learn the spelling and pronunciation of some words you might not know. (Not to mention, la música está bien chida.)

Chécalo!

  1. I LOOOOOOOVE this song! I am a Spanish teacher, and I actually use it in class to work on preterit verb conjugations. It is PERFECT because the words are part of the music video. Every year, I have several students tell me they downloaded it from iTunes after we work with it. :)

  2. Yes, I love type too. It’s part of why I am a graphic designer (you should think about it!) type has a way of evoking emotion and responses even before you read the owrds, that’s powerful stuff!

    • I love graphic design. I can’t imagine studying it formally, (I can’t imagine studying anything formally since I’d be one of those students that changes their major 10 times. LOL)- but it’s a fun hobby.

  3. Pensé que sólo te gustaban las baladas. De haberlo sabido, te habría recomendado “El Cuarteto de Nos” desde hace rato (Es uno de mis favoritos, dentro del rock uruguayo).
Y also recomend: “La vela Puerca” and “No te va a gustar”. These two rock bands sound amazing!!

    • Sí, claro que me gusta el rock & roll :) (I was raised on The Beatles!) … Usualmente, escucho más a Reggaeton o Regional Mexican (amo a las baladas, como bien fijaste), pero me gusta casi de todos tipos de música. Juanes es uno de mis favoritos.

Voy a chequear tus recomendaciones. Gracias, man! Rock on :)

  4. Love it love it love it! Agreed 100% with you. As a designer one of my favorite tools is typography I daze at it sometimes :) Thanks for sharing the video Tracy, I’ve seen it before but I had forgotten about it!
