“We try to put everything in boxes, humans are no exception – I’ve never fit into a box, I think few people do, and so part of accepting myself has been accepting that I don’t need to. The Latino community has not just accepted me, but completely embraced me. They call me amiga, hermana, comadre … and I feel like I’m home.” – Tracy López, September 21, 2010
A Note From The Editor
I’m Tracy and I’m a “gringa” – (a.k.a. “a white girl” or “Anglo”) – married to a Salvadoran. This blog, Latinaish, began in 2009 as a creative outlet to express my love of all things Latin American, to share observations of bilingual, bicultural life, and to connect with others.
Over the years, Latinaish has remained focused on thoughtful content that inspires, educates and encourages respectful discussion on culture, language, and issues affecting la comunidad latina because I believe that through sharing positive stories with humor and by creating honest conversations, poco a poco, we can all grow ourselves and better give back to the world we live in.
The community that has come together through this blog amazes me and I have learned so much from the conversations it has sparked. I am grateful to all of you who read, subscribe, like, tweet, share, and comment. Although Latinaish is full of stories featuring our bilingual/bicultural familia – it isn’t just about me, (“Una gringa bien Latina”) – it’s about all of you and the spirit in which you come here to contribute your own histories, knowledge, questions, and positive energy.
Gracias for reading and for helping to create a welcoming atmosphere for both Latinos, and Latinos de Corazón.
