Ultimamente Carlos y los niños han jugado un juego de FIFA fútbol en Wii. A mi me encanta mucho el fútbol pero no entiendo cómo uno puede pensar que este juego de video es divertido. Agitando un control remote de el Wii no tiene nada que ver con pateando una pelota de fútbol, pero Carlos y los niños sigan gritando “gooooool!” como están ganando la Copa Mundial.

En su trabajo, Carlos se ha hecho muy amigo con uno de sus compañeros mexicanos que se llama Benjamín. Juntos, ellos le gustan hacer burlas a otro compañero quién es gringo. Carlos y Benjamín comenzaron con un chiste de guiñar uno al otro porque se hace incomodo para el gringo.

I think I’ve watched this twenty times and laughed every single time. The interaction between the mother and son is identical to how Suegra and Carlos interact. It’s been my experience that when something falls/breaks/spills/hurts someone, a Latino is more likely than an Anglo to blame the object, the victim of the situation, or someone completely unrelated to the incident. I’ll give you an example that is still “famous” and talked about in our household:
One day Carlos was in a really grumpy mood – nothing had gone right for him all afternoon. He had bought himself a large sweet tea and a burger from the McDonald’s value menu and came home, wanting nothing more than to just sit at the table and enjoy it. Carlos sets the large Styrofoam cup on the table with the bag containing his burger so he can go put his car keys away and wash his hands before eating. He returns to the table and when he goes to pick up the sweet tea and move it to where he wants to sit, he makes the mistake of grabbing it with one hand. The top pops off the sweet tea and he drops it, spilling it everywhere.
A normal reaction to this scenario would be to curse one’s own bad luck – maybe even the McDonald’s worker who didn’t put the top on securely – but Carlos inexplicably yelled at our older son who just happened to be walking by and had absolutely no contact with the sweet tea or Carlos. “Look what you did! You made me spill it everywhere!” he shouted.
I love to tease Carlos about this habit he has so now when I drop things in the kitchen, I’ll call out, “Look what you did, Carlos!” even when he’s in a completely different room.

En agosto del año pasado, regresamos a los EE.UU. de nuestro viaje a El Salvador. Hoy en día, aquí estamos en febrero y extraño a El Salvador más que nada – como uno extraña a un amante que quiere acariciar. El año pasado compartí una foto de una camisa chistosa que encontré en una tienda que se llama “Five Below.” Five Below es una tienda que lleva un montón de cosas para jovenes y todo cuesta cinco dólares o menos, (de ahí, el nombre “Five Below.”)
Bueno, la semana pasada tuve que visitar esa tienda porque mi hijo mayor necesitaba un regalito para una amiga que estaba cumpliendo años y lo invitó a su fiesta.

Suponemos que ella está hablando sobre su relación con el taco. La camisa es super interesante. No sé si estoy analizandolo demasiado pero creo que la camisa está simbolizando una pareja intercultural – especificamente, una gringa blanca con un latino. O sea, soy un cono sabor a vainilla y Carlos es un taco.

As you can see, depicted on this shirt we have an ice cream cone, (it looks like vanilla-flavored), and a taco. Both are holding hands and the cone, (which is a girl with long eyelashes and a bow) – is saying, “It’s complicated.”
We assume she’s talking about her relationship with the taco. The shirt is really interesting. I don’t know if I’m over-analyzing it but the shirt seems to symbolize an intercultural couple – specifically a white gringa and a Latino. In other words, I’m a vanilla-flavored ice cream cone and Carlos is a taco.
I don’t know if the shirt is funny or offensive. What do you think?

Tener el pelo largo significa que tengo que buscar formas creativas para atarme el pelo, especialmente en invierno cuándo mi pelo está mojado después de bañarme y me da frío sentirlo tocando mi piel. Usualmente hago un moño desordenado pero a veces trato algo diferente, incluyendo trenzas.
