Latin American Hot Dogs

Maybe it’s because it’s summer and I keep catching the scent of my neighbor’s grill, but I’ve been craving hot dogs pretty often, which is how I got to looking at hot dog photos on Flickr for over an hour the other day. We even had hot dogs for dinner last night, (I topped mine with minced fresh jalapeño, onions, ketchup, mustard and Sriracha.)

I’ve mentioned before that Carlos insists on having his hot dogs “Salvadoran style” and how this led to my realization that hot dogs aren’t as American as many gringos think they are. Hot dogs can be found in almost every country in the world, and while I love a New York style ballpark frank, I have to say, some of these variations are glorious. Before summertime and hot dog season are almost over, check out these photos and then tell me about the best hot dog you’ve ever had, (Latin American or otherwise.)

  1. I was super surprised when David (from ES) decided to make hot dogs one night. They weren’t the typical hot dogs we eat here, though, and that was what caught me off guard. He says that in ES, they wrap them in a tortilla and put ketchup, mayonnaise, jalapenos and curtido on top. So, that is how we eat them now! We just substitute the hotdog for a veggie dog, of course :).

    • I didn’t see any wrapped in tortillas when we were in El Salvador, (although my Suegra used to do that.) … The hot dogs in El Salvador (at least the ones I saw in San Salvador) are in regular buns (toasted), and then usually topped with ketchup, mayo, and cabbage fried in mustard.

    • True salvadorian style hot dos first start with either weiss wusrt a white german style white hotdog or the typical one fry and topped with cole slaw not cabage with ketchup and or mustard. From what they tell me is that the quality of the meat is not longer like it was before so the white sausage may not be available but it was when I was a kid.

      • Thanks, Mark. Maybe that’s why Carlos isn’t that fond of the texture of the commonly available American hot dogs, (although when I got a hot dog in El Salvador, it seemed pretty similar to what I make for him.)

  2. Now I want a hot dog….hot dogs are actually really big in Norway too! They are called Polser. They truly are all over the world :)

  3. They have “chicago style” hotdogs but no one I know from the chicago area eats them that way. The mexican pictures you have shown I have never seen anyone make them like that over there in DF. Maybe it is different for different parts of the country/world. I personally like only beef or turkey hot dogs. None of that pork or pork/chicken stuff. Add ketchup, mayo and some giadarra(sp?) and I am good!

  4. In Arizona we have the Sonoran Dog! Here’s a description from Wikipedia:
    Arizona The Sonoran hot dog, found in Tucson, Metro Phoenix, and in neighboring Sonora, Mexico, is a hot dog wrapped in mesquite-smoked bacon then cooked on a grill or on a griddle or comal,[2] then topped with freshly chopped tomatoes, onions, shredded yellow or cotijo cheese, tomatillo salsa or red chili sauce, pinto beans, mayonnaise, ketchup and/or mustard, and served on bread and often with a fresh-roasted chili. It originated in Hermosillo, the capital of Sonora.[3][4]

  5. Guess what I’m having for dinner? Hot dog! We call them “Street Hot Dogs” On weekends, in Hollywood,CA, after clubs close and serve the last call, people swarm into the streets and at nearly every corner there are hot dog vendors. Senores y senoras. Similar toppings and sausage taste, so you will buy from who ever is closer. They are all VERY tasty.
    Hot dog wrapped in bacon (of course) the toppings? grilled cebolla, jalapeno with mayo, mustard and ketchup. Simple and Delicious.

    Oye, on a different note. 2 weekends ago fui con mis hermanos y mi papa a un film festival de El Salvador. It was at Raleigh Studios here in Hollywood. We saw movie trailers of upcoming film they are working on. Del Cipitllo y la Siguanaba and other mitos y leyendas. Pero, the feature film we went for was “Tamale Road” by Marcos Villatoro… heres a youtube link

    I have been trying to find the full film, but I don’t think its available yet. Marcos and his family produce the movie all by themselves and if I remember correctly, during Q&A after the film, they said they were going to tweak it and adjust minor things such as subtitles so that the final cut would be perfect.

    Anyway, check it out. Its family friendly.

  6. I eat about two hotdogs per year. Steamed bun with a little ketchup. I’m plain.

    One year, I did two volunteer fundraising things for kindergarten involving cooking hotdogs. I could not stand the smell of hotdogs for about three years! LOL!

    I’d rather have a burger.
